Extension, Dairy Initiatives host virtual dairy management meetings

Paula Mohr READY FOR ROBOTS: The Jan. 22 online meeting will feature Minnesota dairy farmers sharing their experiences with robotic milkers. Free meetings will be held online the second and fourth Fridays of the month through March 26. Jan 15, 2021 University of Minnesota Extension and the Minnesota Dairy Initiative are hosting several virtual meetings on dairy management issues. Zoom discussions will be held from 12:30 to 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Fridays. The next meeting will be Jan. 22 and the series concludes March 26. Meetings are as follows: Jan. 22. “Am I Ready for Robotic Milkers? What s the craze with robotic milkers? Learn from dairy farmers Ashley Swenson and Jim Dieball about the reasons they installed robotic milkers and keys to making them successful.

After finding success distributing Agua Gorda produce to Twin Cities households through the Shared Ground Farmers’ Co-op and restaurants like La Loma Tamales, Garcia has wanted to find markets closer to home.

Strategic Farming: Let’s Talk Crops online sessions run through March Times Report Crookston Times     Join the University of Minnesota Extension in discussing  crop topics at their “Strategic Farming: Let’s Talk Crops!” program with online sessions now available over Zoom.     Sessions will be held over Zoom, which can be accessed via computer, phone or other mobile device, and run from 8:30 to 9:00 am on Wednesdays through March 24.     “If you haven’t yet, please be sure to register for the Strategic Farming: Let’s Talk Crops program! You can join in on the discussion from the comforts of your own living room, or bring the conversation with you as you go about your day,” said a release. “Whatever works best for you, we hope you will join us this winter to discuss some of the key issues and questions around crop production facing Minnesota corn and soybean farmers today.”

Pandemic boosting rural grocers but uncertainty lingers

The stores bring economic benefit and partnerships especially within rural communities, along with the ability to provide affordable prices on everyday essential times amid the pandemic, according to the Dollar General spokesperson.  The pandemic is giving rural grocery stores a boost.  When the coronavirus first broke out, bigger stores ran out of toilet paper, forcing people in small towns to turn to their local stores.  But some owners are still worried their doors will close for good. A recent report has the numbers to prove it. 

Climate-smart trees take root in northeast Minnesota

These trends threaten the iconic forested landscapes of the Northwoods, as well as the tourism, forestry industry and wildlife that depend on them. “I am planning to live here and want to make sure I can walk in the woods when I’m old. We’ll need a forest for that,” said Joel Bransky, an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer with the University of Minnesota Extension Northeast Regional Sustainable Development Partnership (Northeast RSDP).
