Remembering George Floyd: Young people fight against racial violence and demand justice for all

It has been a year since we watched George Floyd, a Black man, die beneath the knee of a white Minneapolis police officer. The cell phone footage of his brutal death sparked global protests that raged through the summer, igniting a long overdue conversation about racism in America. For the last 12 months, young people have helped propel this country’s multifaceted racial reckoning. They have marched through the streets, supported equity in pandemic-era classrooms, kneeled on ball fields, created powerful activist art, spoken out on social media, and stood up for justice in spaces where young folks gather. While former police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of Floyd’s murder last month, the fight against systems that support racism, both implicit and explicit, is far from over.

There s also been social media reports (so we know how true they can be!) that the PD was ordered to remove the American flag from the squads. What s up with that?

Minnesota Police Unions Call for Investigation Into Student Leader for Encouraging False Reports May 4, 2021 Updated: May 4, 2021 Two police unions are asking the University of Minnesota to investigate a student leader who appeared to have encouraged her peers to harass police officers on campus by making false emergency calls. In a video clip of an executive board meeting of the Minnesota Student Association, ranking member Lauren Meyers was asked by another student what exactly she meant when she said “disrupting UMPD,” the University of Minnesota Police Department. “Make their lives hell. Annoy the [explicit] out of them,” Meyers responded. “Like, use up their resources. Make their officers show up to something.”
