David Marcozzi, MD, was  named senior vice president and chief clinical officer (CCO) for the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) and will report to Bert W. O’Malley, MD, president and CEO of UMMC. As CCO, Marcozzi will lead evidence-based programs, practices and activities and establish clear processes to monitor performance against stated goals and assure accountability for performance as measured by quality, service and financial outcomes. Presently, Marcozzi serves as the University of Maryland Medical System – University of Maryland, Baltimore Unified Incident Commander for the COVID-19 response, a role he will continue to fill.  In addition, he has a prominent role in the state as the COVID-19 medical adviser to Gov. Larry Hogan.

The number of unintentional intoxication overdoses those involving all drugs and alcohol rose 18.7% to 2,773 in 2020 from 2,379 in 2019, according to data collected by the Maryland Department of Health. In more than 90% of cases, opioids were detected in bodies postmortem, the highest rate recorded in the state’s history of collecting this data. While too early to formally determine the extent to which COVID-19 has influenced this increase, experts agree the pandemic is likely to blame for the widespread increase in drug use.

A Delaware police officer is fighting for his life after he was seriously hurt early Sunday morning while responding to a fight at a housing subdivision, according to FOX 29. Police said Cpl. Keith Heacook suffered a traumatic head injury after he responded to a call shortly after 5 a.m. for a fight in progress at the Yorkshire Estates Community in Delmar.  Delmar police Chief Ivan Barkley said Heacook, a 22-year police veteran, responded to the call alone. Keith is fighting for his life right now and he needs your prayers along with the elderly couple who were also injured,   Barkley said.  Members from the Delmar Police appreciate the outpouring of community support as we continue to move forward.

Delmar police officer, couple assault: arrest made attempted murder

From staff reports A man was arrested in connection with the assault of a Delmar police officer and an elderly couple on Sunday, Delaware State Police said.  Randon D. Wilkerson, 30, was charged with attempted murder in the first degree, and two counts of first-degree assault, among other charges, according to a Delaware State Police news release late Sunday, April 25.  A vigil was held for the victims Sunday evening at the Delmar Police Department. At about 5:12 a.m. Sunday, Delmar Police Department was dispatched to a fight in progress at the 11000 block of Buckingham Drive in the Yorkshire Estates community. The 911 caller reported an occupant of the house, later identified as Wilkerson, was fighting with other residents of the house and destroying items, police said.
