Back in the Eighties, a 10-year-old named Cyril Grueter dragged his parents to a screening of
Gorillas in the Mist. Bold and haunting, it tells the true story of American primatologist Dian Fossey, who bonded with the mountain gorillas of central Africa.
“I was intrigued by the beauty of these creatures,” says Grueter, now in his 40s and a biological anthropologist at the University of Western Australia. “I read everything I could get a hold of about them, and I knew that studying these primates would become my career.”

Surf’s ripe to determine value of Western Australia’s waves
For the first time, the World Surf League will hold one of its championship events at Rottnest Island and a researcher from The University of Western Australia wants to use the opportunity to determine the economic value of surfing in Western Australia.
In addition to the long-established Margaret River Pro, the inclusion of Rottnest Island in the world tour is a major acknowledgement of Western Australia’s valuable coastal resources, as professional and recreational surfing provide significant economic benefits to the state.
Surfing is an integral part of Australia’s way of life, with more than 2.5 million Australians reported to engage in the sport on a regular basis.

Jane Cutler will deliver her Presidential Address on Tuesday 15 June 2021 to mark her inauguration as the 80th President of IChemE.
Currently an independent Non-Executive Director with the Southern Ports Authority and ChemCentre Western Australia, Jane was elected last year by the membership to take up the position of President of the Institution from June 2021.
In her address, Jane will reflect on her varied career which began with a chemical and materials engineering degree from Auckland University. She has had more than 30 years’ experience working across public, commercial and not-for-profit sectors, spanning diverse industries including resources, oil and gas, financial services, maritime, environment and technology. Jane is passionate about making operations more sustainable.

Both USYD s men s (4-0) and women s (3-1) UBL squads will be looking to consolidate their strong starts to the inaugural UBL season against UWA.

Bankwest launches campaign for new visual T&Cs

Bankwest has launched a new national brand campaign for its new visual-style terms and conditions (T&C’s).
The campaign, developed by Union, WPP AUNZ’s bespoke agency, for Bankwest follows on from the “Bank Less” campaigns, aimed at simplifying the banking jargon for its customers. It aims to showcase the new terms and conditions the financial institution developed with the University of Western Australia, making T&Cs more engaging for customers.
The visual terms and conditions have been created for the Bankwest Easy Transaction Account, which looks to transform the way consumers interact with the traditional text formatting of important customer information.
