VSU makes history with first-ever GSC tournament title

VSU made history with a victory over Alabama-Huntsville in the Gulf South Conference men’s basketball tournament championship game on Sunday to earn the program its first-ever conference tournament title.
The game took place at the University of Montevallo.
The score was tight throughout most of the game. The No. 17 Blazers (17-4) held off a late surge from the No. 11 Chargers (14-3) to come out on top.
Head Coach Mike Helfer was emotional following the historic win.
“You dream about this moment for so long,” coach Helfer said. “You just try to get in a position to win the conference tournament and today, we earned that, and we played great. It’s so hard to make it this far and it’s even harder to win it, and I’m just proud of my team for getting it done.”

The University of Montevallo continues its dominance atop the rankings by earning a total of 1,840 points since the previous update. By amassing nearly 2,000 points over the course of one month based on several top finishes, Montevallo expanded its lead over second-place from 915 points to a whopping 1,840 points now. This month-long stretch helped to double the lead over 2nd place, now occupied by McKendree
Ronald Glenn Ratliff passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 4 2021, surrounded by his loving family.
Glenn was a loving and devoted husband of 38 years to Betty and an amazing father to his two beautiful daughters, Terra and Lacey.
He was born and raised in Perry to M.H. “Buster” and Shirley Ratliff.
He graduated from Taylor County High School in 1975 and then went on to play baseball at Enterprise State Junior College in Enterprise, Ala., and the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Ala.
After college, Glenn came back to Perry and became the recreation director for the City of Perry for 29 years.
UAH falls to Valdosta State in GSC title game
The Chargers were unable to complete the comeback and capture their second straight GSC title, falling to Valdosta State 75-70 on Sunday.

A rematch of last year’s Gulf South Conference title game would not produce the same results for the UAH Chargers. The defending champions were taken down by Valdosta State 75-70 on Sunday.
Playing at the University of Montevallo, The Blazers started hot and quickly built a lead against the Chargers. Hitting the difficult shots, Valdosta would lead by nine in the first before UAH pushed back to end the first half down by only three.
