NC State Leads New UNC System Partnership With Military

January 27, 2021 Staff The University of North Carolina System has signed an Educational Partnership Agreement with the XVIII Airborne (ABN) Corps, with NC State as the lead institution. This partnership will strengthen the UNC System’s existing relationship with the military and allow for new opportunities to encourage and enhance education, research and innovation in STEM and other disciplines.  “We don’t have a monopoly on concepts; there are some great ideas in academia, and we’ve already found some amazing ideas here at the UNC System,” says Lt. Gen. Erik Kurilla, commander of the XVIII Airborne. “For us, this is about tapping into those ideas, expanding our network of innovation, and building opportunities to bring dynamic change to our troops.”

Deep Dive: Endowment formed from NHRMC sale isn t — and shouldn t be, experts say — in a rush to make grants

‘When are they going to be handing out the money?’ Word of the sale and its financial flood has understandably excited those working in the area’s philanthropic sphere. From whispers to public chatter, community leaders are eagerly awaiting updates from the endowment with open hands. “I think there’s been a lot of speculation from nonprofits about, well, ‘When are they going to be handing out the money?’” Hannah Gage, the endowment’s co-chair, said. “First of all, we don’t have the money. That’s outside of our control.” If the sale does close Feb. 1 as expected, the endowment will receive $1.2 billion of the $1.9 billion in cash Novant is paying for the county-owned health care system, immediately making the newly formed foundation one of the largest nonprofit philanthropic organizations in North Carolina.

New UNC programs should focus on helping students find work, pay off debt - Carolina Journal

The UNC System wants to ensure new degree programs prepare students for successful careers.  University of North Carolina System President Peter Hans will overhaul the standards for creating new degree programs. Campuses will now weigh the public interest when adding the programs and decide whether the degrees help students find work and repay their debt.  Board members are also talking about applying the review process to existing programs, says David English, UNC System vice president for academic programs, faculty, and research. The UNC System Board met Thursday, Jan. 21.  “It’s right and proper that we ask to hear the public case for each new program we consider,” Hans said in his prepared remarks. “How will it serve the people of North Carolina? How will it leave the students and citizens of this state better off tomorrow than they are today?”
