I canât lie to youâthings these days are bleak. The coronavirus has fundamentally changed the way our society works, and, even more depressing, there are some serious ways in which it hasnât changed things at all. People are dying. People are losing their jobs. And even people whose circumstances havenât changed that much are dealing with new challenges they probably never thought theyâd have to face.
In times like this (not that I can name another time like this), it feels impossible to maintain any sense of hopefulness or optimism about the future. Not only is it a challenge to imagine any future in a world where things are constantly changing, but itâs especially tough to thinkâlet alone expectâa future in which things are actually somewhat positive.

Schnavia Smith Hatcher has been selected to lead the School of Social Work at the University of Alabama. She will become dean on August 1, 2021.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. A homicide investigation is underway in Charlotte s University City, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Police say two people have died.
It happened Wednesday night in the 9900 block of Brickleberry Lane, which is near several apartment complexes and under three miles from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Police at the scene told WCNC Charlotte they responded to the address after getting asked to conduct a welfare check at an apartment. When they arrived, officers found two adults who had been shot. Both died at the scene.
