Today Apple announced plans to develop a new $US1 ($1) billion campus in North Carolina, a move that will see the company build out its first major East Coast hub.
Apple’s new campus will include an engineering hub and is expected to create more than 3,000 new jobs. Apple claimed the campus will generate more than $US1 ($1).5 billion in annual economic benefits by the time it’s fully complete.
“At this moment of recovery and rebuilding, Apple is doubling down on our commitment to US innovation and manufacturing with a generational investment reaching communities across all 50 states,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.
North Carolina will join other states like California, Colorado, Texas, Washington and Massachusetts as home to Apple offices.
Some expect the tech titan’s arrival in a historically red state to shift demographics with the future job creations. Nonprofit Equality NC, which advocates LGBTQ+ rights, issued a statement that the organization is “thrilled” with Apple’s arrival to North Carolina.
“As a champion of equality and the needs of LGBTQ Americans, we know that the jobs, industry and prospects created by Apple’s expansion into the Triangle will greatly benefit the communities that we serve,” said Kendra R. Johnson, Executive Director, Equality NC.
