HOUSTON - (May 3, 2021) - Ever look at a flatfish like a flounder or sole, with two eyes on one side of its head, and think, How did that happen?
You re in luck. Rice University biologist Kory Evans has the answer. Flatfishes are some of the weirdest vertebrates on the planet, and they got weird very, very fast by changing multiple traits at once over a short period of time, said Evans, an assistant professor of biosciences at Rice who specializes in studying the evolution of fish over long time scales.
A total of seven athletes will represent FPC at the track and field state championships next weekend after the team had one and three individuals qualify during the 4A Region-1 meet on May 1.
Marcus Freeman, Jada Williams and Candice Schweizer will be the only Bulldogs to compete as an individual, with Freeman finishing fifth in the high jump after clearing 1.92m and Williams qualifying in both the 1600m (5:12.37) and 3200m (11:28.14) races after finishing fourth and third. Williams time in the 1600m was also a new school record.
Schweizer finished seventh in the girls javelin with a throw measured at 28.58m to get an at-large bid to qualify.

Trayvon Bromell of the United States set a world-leading 9.88sec with 100m victory at an invitational meet in Florida on Friday, continuing his impressive start to the season after years dogged by injuries.
Bromell, racing at the University of North Florida Invitational near his training base at Jacksonville, powered home ahead of Canada s Olympic bronze medallist Andre DeGrasse who was second in 10.05sec.
Divine Oduduru was third while France s Jimmy Vicaut finished fourth with a time of 10.17.
Bromell s blistering run came after a 100m victory at the Oregon Relays in Eugene last weekend, where he defeated world 200m champion Noah Lyles in 10.01sec.
