CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - At the University of Virginia Medical Center, people were able to drive through and drop off unused medications and prescriptions, all with the goal of keeping these pills off the streets.
“Across the country, across the state, across the county, there are multiple sites where people can go and drop off these medications,” resident physician at UVA Harrison Plunkett said.
He says this drive-through event is in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Agency’s National Drug Take Back Day on April 24.

CULPEPER COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - The Virginia State Police says it is investigating a two-vehicle crash that occurred in Culpeper County Sunday, April 18.
Authorities say the crash happened along Route 29, near Beverly Ford Road, around 10 p.m. A 2011 Subaru Forester was going the wrong way on Rt. 29 when it crashed head-on with a 2004 Honda Pilot.
The driver of the Subaru, 32-year-old Michael K. Ratzenberger of Vienna, died at the scene of the crash.
The driver of the Honda, 50-year-old Jose B. Hernandez Solis of Culpeper, also died at the scene.

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - UVA Health is expanding its operations to increase the capacity of the hospital system.
On Friday, April 16, UVA Health officially acquired the Monticello Community Surgery Center next to the UVA Primary Care Riverside on U.S. Route 29 in Albemarle County. This outpatient center has four operating rooms and one procedure room.
“We know that we need this additional capacity to really serve the community and we know it’s also going to help reduce wait times for various surgical procedures, and it’s also going to free up our capacity and our main operating rooms to really serve the most complex, the sickest patients both within Charlottesville and all throughout the commonwealth,” University of Virginia Medical Center CEO Wendy Horton said.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - An Albemarle County man wanted in connection with a shooting in Charlottesville has been located in North Carolina.
The Charlottesville Police Department announced Thursday, April 15, that A32-year-old Alexander Antonio Rogers has been taken into custody and is currently awaiting extradition to Virginia.
Rogers is charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

WEYERS CAVE, Va. (WVIR) - Virginia State Police are investigating a small airplane crash that happened near the Shenandoah Valley Airport Monday night.
Police say a Piper PA-28-140 was conducting touch-and-go landings at the airport in Weyers Cave. As the small aircraft was attempting to land, the pilot’s controls became unresponsive causing the plane to drift left. The plane caught a limb and then struck several trees just outside the airport property.
