More than 11,000 academics and other university staff opposed to Myanmar’s ruling junta have been suspended after going on strike in protest against military rule, a teachers’ group said.
The suspensions come as the resumption of universities after a year closed due to the coronavirus epidemic prompts a new confrontation between the army and the staff and students who are calling for boycotts over the Feb. 1 coup.

Qualifications are also a must for licensed professions such as accountants, architects, doctors, engineers and lawyers, in both private and public sectors. In 2019, the civil service was bloated with 1.71 million government employees and efforts have been made to trim the excess fat.
Hence, it would be a grave mistake for job seekers to rely on the public sector for employment, although government jobs do provide security of tenure and now made even more important by this pandemic, with huge numbers in the private sector out of jobs or incomes reduced.

“I feel upset to give up a job that I adored so much, but I feel proud to stand against injustice,” said one 37-year-old university rector, who gave her name only as Thandar for fear of reprisals.
