Local masking policies differ
Some school districts stopped requiring masks this spring as soon as the state Supreme Court threw out the statewide mask mandate. Others have made the decision more recently.
The Howard-Suamico School District, a largely suburban district west of Green Bay, already told families late last month that masks would be optional in classrooms for students and staff during the coming academic year. Following CDC guidance on public transportation, though, masks will be required for students who ride the bus.
Some districts, including those in Madison and Green Bay, have yet to make a decision.
During summer school, a policy said face coverings were “strongly recommended, but not required” for students and staff at the high school level in the Green Bay Area Public School District, while the requirement still stood for younger students.
UW System statement on state budget
Thursday, July 8, 2021
MADISON, Wis. University of Wisconsin System President Tommy Thompson and Regent President Edmund Manydeeds III issued this statement today:
“The University of Wisconsin is the state’s greatest asset next to its people. We thank Gov. Evers and the legislature for their leadership in providing significant investments in the university’s mission, especially critical improvements in our infrastructure and support for our employees.”
The University of Wisconsin System serves approximately 165,000 students. Awarding nearly 37,000 degrees annually, the UW System is Wisconsin’s talent pipeline, putting graduates in position to increase their earning power, contribute to their communities, and make Wisconsin a better place to live. Nearly 90 percent of in-state UW System graduates stay in Wisconsin five years after earning a degree. The UW System provides a 23:1 return on state investment. UW System institutions also co
Vaccinated students and school staff may be able to safely leave their masks at home, according to new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but some Wisconsin schools might still require them.
Bob Peterson, president of the Milwaukee School Board, said Friday that the district’s plan to require masks indoors for everyone in the fall, approved by the board in June, still stands. We’ll continue to monitor local health data and further advice from the health department, but right now our current policy will remain in force, Peterson said.
Many other school districts in the state had already made masks optional in recent months. For districts that do require masks, the guidance raises a host of questions about when it’s appropriate to make masks optional for unvaccinated students, as well as how to track vaccination status legally and without stigmatizing students.
