/ University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo researchers located an endangered native seabird called the ʻuaʻu and a nesting site on Maunakea in May 2021.
Researchers have discovered an endangered ʻuaʻu burrow on Maunakea in the first documented nesting site of the Hawaiian petrel on Maunakea since 1954.
University of Hawai‘i at Hilo graduate Bret Nainoa Mossman has been looking for an ʻuaʻu burrow for the past four years. After many long, cold nights on the high elevation slopes, he and his collaborators finally located the endangered native seabird in May.
But their excitement turned to dread last week when another creature was spotted on the cameras put up to monitor the nesting site a feral cat.

The University of La Verne has appointed Emmeline de Pillis as the new dean of the College of Business and Public Management. One of the university’s four colleges, it enrolled 2,412 students in 2020-21 at the bachelor’s through doctoral levels. She will join the university on July 12, replacing Abe Helou, who had served as dean since 2008.

A nonprofit organization that serves and advocates for the Micronesian and Pacific Islander communities in Hawaii plans to open a youth center in Honolulu this month.
The center will offer college and career prep, cultural exhibitions, mentorship programs and study areas, We Are Oceania CEO Josie Howard told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. It will have resources for homeless youth and families, she said.
“Just like a home means everything to a family, this center will be the same,” Howard said. “It’s a place where they can come and seek help. Somebody is there to help, and somebody is there who understands them.”
