University of Hartford sports drops from Division I to III

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — University of Hartford sports are dropping from Division I to Division III. The decision comes after the Hartford men’s basketball team this season won its first America East championship and played in the NCAA Tournament for the first time, losing to eventual national champion Baylor in the first round. Hartford President Gregory Woodward said the school wants to “transition to this new model for intercollegiate athletics.” The discussion to downgrade to Division III has sparked marches on campus led by athletes and a petition from alumni to remain in Division I. The Board of Regents said Thursday night’s vote came after a year of discussions. A consultants report released last month said the school could save more than $9 million a year by making the move.

Cherry-picked data and other problems with UHart Division I analysis

Cherry-picked data and other problems with UHart Division I analysis Connecticut Public Radio There is much to be said in response to Michael Gargano’s opinion piece (“Athletics did not create the financial crisis at UHart” April 26) on the University of Hartford and its contemplation to move from Division I to Division III athletics, but I will confine myself to three points. First, Gargano is hardly a neutral observer here. He was part of the decision-making back in the 1980s that moved UHart up to Division I. Given that, it is interesting that he is willing to term President Greg Woodward’s tenure as one of “failed leadership” just three and a half years into the job while simultaneously suggesting we continue to wait for the promised rewards of Division I athletics some 37 years later.

Hartford softball joins the protests over upcoming Division III move

Funny how Division I athletics fit the mission for 30 years, yet suddenly it doesn’t. Not to mention that seemingly the only person in the state of Connecticut who didn’t congratulate men’s basketball head coach John Gallagher was the university president. The town of West Hartford even celebrated Men’s Basketball Day for them. Hell, the Governor was even there! Am I little bit salty? Naturally. I live and breathe Hartford athletics. But the Hartford Hawks’ base will not take this lightly or lying down. There will be protests. There’s already a petition to oust the current president that has over 1,000 signatures.
