A New Year is a new opportunity to focus on health and a great time to choose a healthy diet for you. Dr. Brian Reed, Chair of Clinical Sciences at the University of Houston College of Medicine has some advice.
“There are so many choices when it comes to selecting a diet. I typically recommend a balanced diet that closely resembles the USDA s Healthy Plate.”
At each meal, half of your plate should be comprised of fruits and vegetables.
Add color to your plate with green leafy vegetables, colored peppers, carrots, onions and other produce.

Cervical cancer is usually a preventable disease. Dr. Kimberly Pilkinton, an ob/gyn physician in the Department of Clinical Sciences at the University of Houston College of Medicine explains it is also curable if detected early and treated.
“Most patients in the United States with cervical cancer have not undergone routine screening for at least 5 years. My recommendation is to get your smear.”
“New technologies for prevention of cervical cancer continue to be developed, but the pap smear has saved the lives of many. Now with HPV testing there is potential for further success.”

Surviving the pandemic is difficult for everyone, but it can be extra hard for teens.
“Social distancing due to the pandemic can be especially hard on teens, who may feel isolated from friends. They have also missed out on important events like graduation and prom.”
“Here are some ways to help your teen:
Respect their privacy and need for ‘down time.’
Allow them to stay connected with friends and loved ones by text, video chat or social media.
Ask them take on new responsibilities, such as cooking, or keeping an eye on a younger sibling.
