TORONTO The Ontario government has reached out the U.S. for additional health-care workers as the third COVID-19 wave pushes some of the province s hospitals to the brink. Health Minister Christine Elliott told reporters at Queen s Park on Tuesday that Ontario has requested help from the U.S. and Philippines, but is looking into options from other countries as well. We are continuing our search internationally … to see if there are any teams that are able to come from other countries to come and help us, Elliott said. Ontario hasn t received an answer on whether support will be sent to Canada, Elliott said.

More than 26,000 Pennsylvanians have lost their lives to COVID-19 since the global pandemic hit the state in March 2020.
The 84 deaths reported Tuesday by the Pennsylvania Department of Health bring the state’s death toll to 26,072 people, according to the daily report. The majority of those who have died were over 65.
The 3,333 new coronavirus infections also reported Tuesday bring the total to 1,139,390 people sickened since the first case was detected almost 14 months ago.
This comes as the rate of new infections and hospitalized patients is slowing, but deaths are still rising.

TORONTO A team of nine healthcare workers from Newfoundland and Labrador have arrived in Toronto to help treat COVID-19 patients in some of the city’s hardest hit hospitals. The group, which includes the wife of Newfoundland Premier Andrew Furey, touched down at Pearson International Airport in a Canadian Forces Hercules aircraft early Tuesday afternoon. They are the first reinforcements to arrive in Ontario since the province issued a call for more than 600 healthcare professionals nearly two weeks ago. The Canadian Armed Forces also plans to deploy nine ICU nurses and up to three multipurpose medical assistance teams in the province, though it is unclear when they will arrive.
