Johnson warned against cutting higher-education funds for performing arts subjects

TRADE unions will warn Prime Minister Boris Johnson against proposed higher-education (HE) funding cuts for performing and creative arts subjects in a joint open letter today. Proposed cuts in the sector’s teaching-grant budget for 2021-2022 would halve the value of grants for arts subjects in England, with funding instead prioritised for “subjects vital to the economy and labour markets.” In their open letter, creative unions Equity and Bectu, the University & College Union (UCU), the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain, the Musicians’ Union, Unison, and Unite warn that the Tory proposal “threatens the health and accessibility of the entertainment and education sectors, jeopardises the livelihoods of HE and creative workers and narrows training opportunities for future generations.”

Russell Group flags support of UUK options as USS sees grounds for cautious optimism | News

By Susanna Rust2021-05-24T15:33:00+01:00 Russell Group, a group of 24 leading research-intensive UK universities, has set out areas of agreement with options put forward by Universities UK (UUK) in its consultation on ways of addressing the contested 2020 valuation of the £68bn (€79bn) Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS). The areas of agreement are indicated in what the group described as a statement of principles it believes are key to any future discussions about the pension scheme. Russell Group’s statement comes shortly after USS told heads of participating institutions it believed “there are grounds for cautious optimism”. “A way forward is emerging that could address affordability concerns and put the scheme on a more sustainable footing, but which could also see members continue to build up a meaningful level of inflation-protected income for life in retirement,” USS wrote in a note to heads of employers on Friday.
