President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday paid a glowing tribute to the late former President, Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings, whom he described as a “charismatic, energetic and fearless leader”.
The President said the young Air Force officer burst onto the political scene like a meteor that did not disintegrate but remained potent till the end of its life.
“On the contrary, it remained potent until the very end of its life, leaving strong footprints in the sands of time,” he said about the man he affectionately called ‘Comandante’, a Spanish and Italian expression for Commandant.
President Akufo-Addo’s tribute was delivered at the final funeral rites of former President Rawlings at the Black Star Square to climax three days of national mourning of the first President of the Fourth Republic and longest-serving Head of State.

Dr Vladimir Antwi-Danso, the Dean of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC), has lauded Government s decision to rename the University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale after late former President Jerry John Rawlings.
He said it was a “befitting honour” by the Government for the late former President Rawlings, who was Ghana s longest serving Head of State.
Dr Antwi-Danso gave the commendation in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Thursday in Accra, in a reaction to the announcement by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that the Government had decided to rename UDS, Tamale, after former President Rawlings.

He made the remark in reaction to the announcement by President Akufo-Addo that the Tamale campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS) will be renamed after former President Jerry John Rawlings.
President Akufo-Addo while reading his tribute at the state funeral for Jerry John Rawlings said, although Rawlings declined the honour when he was alive, his family has agreed to his [Akufo-Addo’s] proposal for the school to be renamed after him.

The former President who passed away in November 2020 after a short illness declined a proposal to name the university after him when he was alive.
However, President Akufo-Addo while reading his tribute at the burial service insisted that the act is to immortalise the vibrant and energetic leader who played a significant role in the establishment of the institution.
“Whilst he was with us, he, respectfully, declined an offer I made to him in 2017, to have the University of Development Studies (UDS), Tamale which he personally helped establish, named after him.
