Australian university leaders are nearly three times more likely to be a man than a woman.
Of 37 public university chancellors, just 10 are women (27%) and 27 (73%) are men. It’s exactly the same for vice-chancellors: 10 are women and 27 are men.
Together, this means men hold 54 of the 74 top jobs in Australian higher education.
Last year presented a big opportunity for progress towards gender equity among university leaders. During 2020, vice-chancellors at 15 of Australia’s 37 public universities either announced their departure from the role, or actually left. This move of 41% of the vice-chancellors in a single year provided the best opportunity for improving gender equity in living memory.

Dear Students,
As we approach a year since our transition to remote learning, I remain deeply grateful for and impressed by your resilience, adaptability, and perseverance in these unprecedented times. Like you, I am thankful that COVID-19 cases in L.A. County are declining, while vaccination rates are increasing. We are already starting to see positive developments in the L.A. County Department of Public Health guidelines, and have recently been able to approve a proposal from the College of the Arts for some students to safely return to campus to complete a film project required for graduation and another that enables athletes to be on campus for conditioning and competition. We will continue to monitor the guidelines and assess campus access as restrictions are modified.
