Through remote instruction, hybrid classes and adaptive lesson plans, Department of Chemistry instructors helped their students through the pandemic. None of them want to do it again but the pandemic, and its challenges and silver linings, varied between instructors, students and classes.
Some profs learned they liked online lectures and want to keep them. Some dreaded hybrid class prep, with its inevitable tech issues and 600-plus separate containers needed to run a single lab experiment. They’re grateful for teaching assistants (TAs). A record appropriation for the Ohio Arts Council in the stateâs 2022-23 budget has paid off for Athens County arts organizations.
The OAC awarded a total of nearly $255,000 to 17 entities in Athens County â the highest amount and greatest number of recipients in recent years, if not ever.
The award total represents a 40% increase in funding over the 2020 grant cycle.
Of the 17 grants awarded, two went to organizations that have not received funding in recent grant cycles. The Federal Valley Resource Center in Stewart was awarded $4,184 for its âFrom Old Savannah to Tablertownâ event scheduled for Sept. 11. Ohio Universityâs Tantrum Theater received a total of $6,223 to sponsor a Middle School Drama Club in the county and to engage two teaching artists for a series of improvisation workshops at Passion Works Studio that will lead to a free public performance.

A multi-university task force led by Jeff Lewin (Research Integrity) has been recognized by the Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) for its efforts during the pandemic.
Lewin and other task force members received the Excellence in Volunteerism award from CSHEMA for creating guidance for restarting university laboratories after pandemic-related closures.
The task force developed a checklist to assist higher education safety specialists and researchers around the country in preparing to safely open and resume laboratory activities. The checklist was also used as the framework for the University’s checklist on ramping up research.
