UPUA Continues Internal Elections, Passes 16th Assembly s First Legislation

The 16th Assembly of the University Park Undergraduate Association met virtually Wednesday night for its second meeting. The night began with a special presentation from student trustee Bryan Culler. He spoke about his role in the Next Gen Penn State Advisory Group, a group organized with the purpose of seeking input and guiding community involvement in the search for the next university president. Culler shared this survey for any students, faculty, staff, or alumni interested in weighing in about characteristics, priorities, and goals that are important in the search for the next president. The next special presentation was from UPUA Speaker Sydney Gibbard, President Erin Boas, and Vice President Najee Rodriguez.

EDITORIAL | Divestment from fossil fuels should be augmented with other plans for a greener Penn State

Last month, the University Park Undergraduate Association decided to approve Resolution #56-15, setting forth a bold demand — Penn State s divestment from the fossil fuel industry in all its smog-tainted glory.  As it turns out, the university has a small but by no means negligible investment in coal, gas and oil, perhaps explaining why its vision of the future appears so hazy and short-sighted. In mathematical terms, about 6% of Penn State s assets lie in fossil fuels.  While Resolution #56-15 is not binding upon the university and administration officials can ignore it altogether, the proposal still ops for concessionary realism. Rather than demanding that all requested processes wrap up by next year, UPUA recommends a gradual approach that aims for total divestment by 2026.

Penn State organizations to host climate strike on Earth Day

The Sunrise Movement, PSU Climate Action and Eco Action will host a rally they in accordance with Earth Day on Thursday. The event will be held at Old Main Lawn from noon to 1 p.m. to demand community leaders do better in ensuring the health of the planet. According to a release, the groups have three demands from the event including State College leaders investing in renewable energy and guaranteeing good jobs for all, Penn State divesting from fossil fuel investments, and Penn State and State College to incorporate sustainability education into its curriculums. The event is taking place because of Penn State s influence on the commonwealth and because of the university s educational opportunity to create the next sustainability leaders, the release said.
