Penn State students vote yes on referendum calling on university to divest from fossil fuels

The question read: âPenn State should (1) commit to divestment from its long-term holdings in fossil fuel asset classes as quickly as possible; (2) release information about its current holdings in fossil fuels; and (3) publicly comment on the proposed divestiture.â The referendum evolved out of Resolution #56-15, which was introduced in a UPUA General Assembly meeting on March 18. It formally called on Penn State to halt all investment in potential fossil fuels holdings and sell any fossil fuels assets by the end of 2026. It also called on Penn State to reinvest in renewable energies. According to the resolution, 6% of Penn Stateâs long term investments are in âreal assets,â which include things like coal, gas and oil.

Erin Boas, Najee Rodriguez elected UPUA president and vice president on lone ballot

After 21 hours of open polls, Erin Boas and Najee Rodriguez have been elected as undergraduate executive president and vice president, respectively, offices currently held by the outgoing Zachary McKay and Lexy Pathickal. Boas (junior-international politics and economics) currently serves as an at-large representative in the University Park Undergraduate Associationâs 15th Assembly. She has been involved with student government since her freshman year and also serves as UPUAâs liaison to âMovinâ On,â a Penn State music festival. Rodriguez (sophomore-international politics, national security and history) represents the College of the Liberal Arts in the General Assembly. He also currently serves as the chair for the Committee on Justice and Equity, a newly formed legislative committee that grew quickly in the assembly.
