Dump truck hits sheriff’s SUV on I-280 shoulder as officer assisted driver of disabled mini-van Updated Mar 01, 2021; An on-duty Essex County Sheriff’s Officer was injured Monday morning after his SUV was rear-ended by a dump truck along the shoulder of Interstate 280, officials said. The sheriff’s officer had just aided a the driver of a disabled mini-van and returned to his vehicle when the dump truck struck the SUV from behind at around 4:50 a.m. near exit 8A in West Orange, Essex County Sheriff Armando B. Fontoura said. The sheriff’s officer was taken to University Hospital in Newark to be checked for neck and back pain after the air bags deployed. He was since been released, according to Fontoura.
