Galway Bay fm newsroom – The woman killed in a suspected hit and run near Furbo has been named locally as Rita Dirrane from Inis Mór.
Gardai were called to the scene on the R336 Barna to Spiddal Road shortly after 7.30pm on Wednesday where Ms. Dirranne, aged in her 50s, was discovered with serious injuries.
She was taken to University Hospital Galway where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
It’s believed she was struck by a vehicle which failed to remain at the scene.
Anyone with information who was in the area between 6.15pm and 7.15pm is asked to contact Salthill Garda Station on 091 514720.

225 admitted patients are waiting for beds at hospitals across the country today, according to the INMO Trolley Watch figures.
195 patients are waiting in emergency departments, while 30 are in wards elsewhere in the hospital system.
There are 28 in total waiting for beds at Mayo University Hospital,17 of those are in the emergency department.
It is the second highest total in the country after University Hospital Limerick at 55.
Elsewhere across the region there are 18 waiting for beds at Sligo University Hospital, 15 at University Hospital Galway and 1 at the Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a two vehicle road traffic collision on the N83 at Two Mile Ditch in County Galway this morning.
The incident involving a car and a lorry occurred at approximately 6:20am.
The driver of the car, a male aged in his 40s was taken to University Hospital Galway with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
No other injuries were reported.
The road was closed but has since reopened.
Gardaí say investigations into the matter are ongoing.

The woman killed in a suspected hit and run in County Galway on Wednesday has been named locally as Rita Dirrane from Inis Mór.
Gardai were called to the scene on the R336 Barna to Spiddal Road near Furbo shortly after 7.30pm in the evening where the pedestrian in her 50s, was discovered with serious injuries.
She was taken to University Hospital Galway and was pronounced dead a short time later.
It’s believed she was struck by a vehicle which failed to remain at the scene.
