NHS increases surgery sessions to tackle hospital waiting lists

The number of patients at the four trusts waiting at least a year from their referral until they are treated has grown from just 20 pre-pandemic to 5,737. Between January last year and the same month this year the proportion of people with cancer receiving their first treatment from Imperial College Healthcare NHS trust within 62 days of being urgently referred by their GP fell from 82% to 73.8%. The NHS constitution says that 85% of such care, such as surgery or chemotherapy, should begin within the specified 62 days. Similarly, until the pandemic, only 0.7% of patients at Imperial were not getting a diagnostic test such as an X-ray or CT or MRI scan within six weeks. Trusts are required to ensure no more than 1% of patients miss out on a test in that time. But that has now escalated to more than 20%.

New EnergyPod for tired staff to take naps at Poole Hospital

DON T panic, a giant Pac Man has not just eaten a health worker – this is a new EnergyPod designed for staff to grab a quick nap. Poole Hospital s anaesthetic department has received the new pod, which plays gentle sleep music, so they can take much-needed breaks between working on call and night shifts. Rachel Haden, consultant anaesthetist, said: During a stressful and challenging year, well-being of NHS staff has been vitally important. This generous donation has enabled the anaesthetic department to purchase an EnergyPod, giving us a much-needed quiet space to de-stress and rest after long shifts or if feeling overwhelmed and exhausted.
