By Brandon McKinley In a recently published article, faculty and staff in the UF Center for Arts in Medicine and UF College of Education present best practices for utilizing theatrical arts to reduce social isolation and improve health outcomes for LGBTQ+ youth.  Jeffrey Pufahl, research assistant professor at the Center for Arts in Medicine, emphasizes that LGBTQ+ communities face a lot of barriers and discrimination in society.  “These barriers lead to health outcomes that include increased anxiety, increased depression, and, especially for youth, increased suicidality,” he says.  In a recent report by the Trevor Project the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning young people 42 percent of LGBTQ+ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year.

Developing An Existential Education | Dublin City University

17/05/2021 Dr Jones Irwin, Associate Professor in Philosophy and Education, School of Human Development was one of the invited keynote speakers for the 2 ND International Conference of Pedagogical Research on the 15 th-16 th May, 2021. The ICOPR conference this year was a virtual one, organized through Universiti Utara, Malaysia and Duzce University, Turkey. Dr Irwin’s presentation was entitled ‘ Developing an Existential Education in Response to the Pandemic’, which explored the resources of the existential tradition in philosophy for contemporary philosophy of education. In particular, the paper explored how the themes of an ‘existentialist’ tradition in philosophy might help us to reimagine our education systems and our world. This existential tradition of thought has always had specific influences on education theory. The project partners included Fondazione Edmund Mach - Centro Ricerca e Innovazione, based in Trento, Italy, and the University of Southampton. The research would be performed in the School of Human Development and Health at the University of Southampton and include funding for a related PhD studentship. It would include a double blind, placebo controlled, human study carried out during a period of stress induced sleep disruption.
