State School Superintendent Richard Woods recently announced the names of the 2021 Georgia Scholars, which includes 20 students from Cobb Schools. In total, there were only 323 graduating seniors recognized as 2021 Georgia Scholars statewide.
The Georgia Scholars from Cobb represent the following schools: Campbell High School, Harrison High School, Hillgrove High School, Kell High School, Pope High School, Sprayberry High School, Walton High School, and Wheeler High School.
Through the Georgia Scholar program, the Georgia Department of Education identifies and honors high school seniors who have achieved excellence in school and community life. Students eligible for Georgia Scholar recognition are high school seniors who exhibit excellence in all phases of school life, in community activities, and the home. Each Georgia Scholar receives a seal for their diploma.

A total of 323 graduating seniors from across Georgia have been recognized as 2021 Georgia Scholars, State School Superintendent Richard Woods announced today.
Through the Georgia Scholar program, the Georgia Department of Education identifies and honors high school seniors who have achieved excellence in school and community life. Students eligible for Georgia Scholar recognition are high school seniors who exhibit excellence in all phases of school life, in community activities, and in the home. Each Georgia Scholar receives a seal for their diploma.
These students have carried exemplary course loads during their four years of high school; performed excellently in all courses; successfully participated in interscholastic events at their schools and in their communities; and have assumed roles in extracurricular activities sponsored by their schools. ATLANTA, Ga. â The chaos created by COVID-19 may have a silver lining for students dreading the annual Georgia Milestones tests, as well as for schools which feared the impact of low scores on their academic reputation.
Last month the U.S. Department of Education approved Georgiaâs request to waive the annual accountability requirements, which is the annual school âreport cardâ known as the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI).
A key piece of the CCRPI is student performance on the annual Georgia Milestones assessments. Under federal law, all states must administer an annual assessment of student achievement.
The federal government did not waive Georgiaâs request to pause the assessments this year; a decision which disappointed state leaders.

ATLANTA, Ga. (WTXL) â Governor Brian Kemp and the Georgia Department of Education opened applications for the Families of Children with Special Needs Reimbursement through May 14.
âIn my State of the State Address this year, I announced that Georgia would set aside $10 million in Governor s Emergency Education Relief funds to offset costs that parents of students with special needs faced due to COVID-19. As we launch these applications, we are taking the first step in fulfilling that promise, said Gov. Kemp.
