Lancaster ArtWalk returns this weekend with new exhibits, special events and more

This weekend marks the spring edition of Lancaster ArtWalk, a self-guided tour of galleries in Lancaster city. Some galleries will offer live demonstrations and meet-the-artist events, while others will extend their hours to make sure art lovers have a chance to check out the displays. For some, this year’s spring edition of ArtWalk is particularly special, as galleries were closed this time last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are what a few galleries have planned this weekend. Admittedly, this listing only scratches the surface. For a full schedule of ArtWalk events, visit lanc.news/SpringArtWalk. PENNSYLVANIA SCHOOL DISTRICT close to renaming middle school

The School District of Lancaster will soon decide on what to rename the former Edward Hand Middle School, which was named after a slave owner. There are three finalists for the new name, including Hazel Jackson, who was the first Black woman to teach in Lancaster.Born in South Carolina, Jackson taught in the segregated south before moving north, where she hoped to find greater opportunities. After nine years of rejection, she took a bold step. She just sat in the superintendent’s office every Friday. After waiting several years, and finally said, ‘I m just going to sit here.’ And she sat there until they finally gave her a break when there was an opening, said Jackson’s granddaughter, Amber Holland. After teaching in the School district of Lancaster Jackson went on to become the first Black professor at Millersville University, where she taught English literature until her retirement in 1994.

With COVID-19 risk still high in Lancaster County, high school senior celebrations must emphasize pandemic precautions [editorial]

With COVID-19 numbers still too high in Lancaster County, safety must be the priority at prom and other high school senior celebrations [editorial]

THE ISSUE As LNP | LancasterOnline’s Alex Geli reported Sunday, some Lancaster County high schools — including Columbia, Donegal, Hempfield and Solanco — “have canceled their proms outright, the second year in a row the pandemic has shut down a hallowed high school tradition. Several schools have yet to iron out plans. Some, like Pequea Valley and Octorara Area, are holding more traditional proms with health protocols in place. Others aren’t calling their event a prom at all, but a ‘promfest,’ ‘gala’ or ‘senior soiree’ in recognition of the fact that arrangements must stray from the traditional prom setup.” It used to be that senior year unfolded with predictability in its pomp and circumstance: Homecoming, senior recognition nights, the spring musical, prom, commencement.
