After the caps are thrown and the ceremony’s over and done this June, Newport-Mesa seniors just a few credits shy of graduation will still be able to graduate as long as they make it up this summer.
The Newport-Mesa Unified School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved a temporary waiver this Tuesday that will allow seniors within 20 credits of completing their graduation requirements to graduate if they obtain those credits from adult education or summer remediation programs recognized by the district and present them for consideration before Sept. 30.
Those students won’t be able to walk at graduation, said Assistant Supt. Sara Jocham.

SOCSD to offer summer enrichment sessions
The Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District will be offering enrichment learning experiences for students in the district throughout the summer.
SOCSD Grants and Innovative Strategies Specialist Brandi Burton presented at the district’s monthly meeting Tuesday evening to discuss the plans for these enhancements activities. While each session will focus on at least one core curriculum subject, students will have the opportunity to participate in topics related to lifestyle and skill-building.

“We need to keep these students with their peers in a classroom type situation as we can for exciting and enriching activities that will spark their interest,” Burton said. “Most of the time when you have students participating in enriching and engaging activities like that they will show gains in reading and mathematics.”
NEISD eases COVID-19 protocols at schools
The school board voted Tuesday to make masks optional during recess and also made changes to other COVID-19 safety guidelines

Students will now be allowed to remove masks during recess and outdoor physical education classes.
The board also voted to allow visitors on campus and Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) groups and booster clubs to meet on campus. In addition, parent meetings and parent-teacher conferences can now be held in person.
Students and employees who are fully vaccinated will no longer be required to quarantine if they’ve had close contact with someone with COVID-19.
