KUALA LUMPUR: Apart from nine new clusters detected today, 52 of the 254 existing active clusters also reported an increase in new cases today, with the Bukit Pasir Cluster (Muar, Johor) recording the highest number at 779 new cases.
Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that a significant increase was recorded among existing clusters such as Dataran Utas Cluster (156 cases) and Beringin Cluster (101 cases).
He said that thus far 570 clusters had been reported, including nine new clusters today, while 316 clusters had ended, including seven clusters declared to have ended today – Cempaka (Johor), Hilir (Kelantan), Karamunting (Sabah), Lengkuk (Selangor and Negeri Sembilan), Prestij (Kuala Lumpur), Sutera (Sabah), and Tapak Bina Sungai Udang (Kuala Lumpur).

PETALING JAYA: As the daily Covid-19 cases in the country hit past the 3,000 mark for the first time, Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has warned that the number of cases could reach 8,000 a day in March if the infectivity rate – known as R-naught (R0) – stays at 1.2.
Yesterday’s 3,027 cases, the highest since the pandemic started, exceeded the previous day’s record high of 2,593 cases.
Dr Noor Hisham, referring to a Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Removed (SEIR) model on the forecasts of daily cases from January to May, said daily cases could reach 5,000 by mid-February and 3,000 cases in the fourth week of January.

PETALING JAYA: Business industry players have called on the government not to resort to a full-scale lockdown to curb the rising Covid-19 cases but to look at targeted approaches such as tightening the SOP.
Malaysian Employers Federation executive director Datuk Shamsuddin Bardan, responding to talk of a potential lockdown, said a movement control order similar to the one in March last year would do more harm than good.
“The number of new infections is a real cause of concern among employers, employees and members of the public.
“There are right steps to handle the situation, but these should not include the MCO because of the negative impact of such a lockdown on the economy.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia reported a record high of 3,027 new Covid-19 cases today.
Johor recorded the most new infections with 1,103 cases, followed by Selangor and Sabah at 706 and 493 cases respectively, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement today.
Six of today’s reported cases were imported while the rest were through local transmissions.
Today’s cases brought the cumulative figure in the country to 128,465 Covid-19.
