Malaysian govt defends Covid-19 response amid criticism as third lockdown looms

KUALA LUMPUR - The Malaysian government on Tuesday (May 11) defended its response to the Covid-19 pandemic amid criticism of poor coordination and crisis communication as the country heads into a third lockdown from Wednesday. The top officials in charge of the security and health aspects of the pandemic response held a rare joint press conference to address the criticisms. Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob insisted that Kuala Lumpur was serious in tackling the pandemic, saying that confusion over changing Covid-19 protocols was exacerbated by the dynamic nature of fluctuating infections in the country. Malaysia will enforce its third movement control order (MCO) from Wednesday for nearly a month following another surge in infections and hospitalisations, just over two months after the country gradually reopened its economy after a second lockdown in January and February. The first lockdown was between March and May last year.

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's top health official on Saturday (May 8) painted a grim picture of the country's struggle against the coronavirus pandemic, saying new cases could hit 7,000 a day by the end of this month. Malaysia was initially projected to record about 3,000 cases by mid-May, and 5,000 cases by the end of the month, said the Health.

He said two types of test kits were being registered. After that, it is possible that such test kits can be obtained from pharmacies, just like a pregnancy test. If the test is positive, the individual must go to the clinic to seek medical help, he said during a press conference on Saturday (May 8). Dr Noor Hisham said the ministry was looking to implement this as soon as possible. He also said currently, it was not compulsory for casual contacts or individuals who were possibly exposed to another person infected with Covid-19, to get tested for the virus. Casual contacts can get tested through the existing methods like RT-PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) and RTK-Ag (antigen rapid test kit), but this is not a must, he said.

Covid: new cases increase to 4,519 today (Updated)

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia continues to record more than 4,000 daily Covid-19 cases with 4,519 new cases in the past 24 hours, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah. He said the new cases brought the cumulative Covid-19 cases in the country to 436,944 cases. Selangor, he added was still reporting the highest cases with 1,722 cases followed by Kuala Lumpur (557) and Sarawak (479). “In the past 24 hours, there were 2,719 recovery cases recorded, taking the cumulative recovery cases to 398,723. There are now 36,564 active cases,” he told a media conference on the development of Covid-19 situation here today. He said there were 393 Covid-19 patients in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with 210 of them on ventilators while fatalities due to the disease rose to 1,657 cases following 25 new cases reported today.
