Two Sarasota contestants recall time with Alex Trebek on Jeopardy!

Nearly 30 years ago, three-time champion Kay Kipling discovered how popular host Alex Trebek was among viewers. “Even though I loved ‘Jeopardy!’ as a show, I hadn’t realized how much of a fan base he had,” said Kipling, executive editor of Sarasota Magazine. “Everyone in the audience was crazy about him. They were in awe of him. It was like a rock star moment for them. This was Alex Trebek.” And that was just seven years into what would become a 36-year run as host of the show. At 7:30 p.m. Friday, “Jeopardy!” is scheduled to air the final episode that Trebek taped just two weeks before he died in November after a battle with pancreatic cancer. In 1984, he became host of a syndicated version of the Merv Griffin quiz show that originally captivated viewers in a 1964-75 daytime run with host Art Fleming.

Enjoy a monthly guide of adventures for 2021

Enjoy a monthly guide of adventures for 2021 By Bill Reid New Year’s Day is Friday and each of us will welcome 2021 in our own way. I will be happy to see 2020 in the rearview mirror. The challenges this past year were unprecedented in my lifetime, and, even with the turn of the calendar year, the months ahead will continue in our “new” normal with economic uncertainty for many and health and safety concerns for all. Despite the challenges of 2020, the year did bring my family unimaginable joy with the birth of twin grandsons July 19. My son and daughter-in-law live in the Midwest and due to the pandemic we have only seen the babies in video chats. In the year ahead I will finally hold them in my arms.
