Car crashes down ravine on Old Springville Road

From The Tribune staff reports CLAY The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was on the scene of an early-morning crash on Friday, Feb. 5, 2021. It happened around 5 a.m. in the 5700 block of Old Springville Road, in Clay. Deputies had to temporarily close the roadway in both directions to allow a large tow truck to remove the vehicle from the ravine. Sgt. Joni Money said no one was hurt in the two-vehicle crash. The cause and circumstances surrounding the crash are under investigation.

NWS upgrades tornado to EF-3 with winds up to 150 mph

From The Tribune staff reports CENTER POINT The National Weather Service in Birmingham upgraded the tornado that hit the Fultondale area to an EF-3. Damage was reported primarily north of Walker Chapel Road NW to U.S. Highway 31 and to New Castle Road. Crews said winds were at least 150 mph on the evening of Monday, Jan. 25, 2021. “Keep in mind that intensity & width varied along its path,” the NWS posted on Facebook. “The EF-3 damage was focused near Lykes Blvd. to New Castle Rd.” The tornado had a path length of 9.5 miles and a max width of 500 yards, according to the NWS.

1 dead, around 30 injured after apparent tornado in Jefferson County

From The Tribune staff reports CENTER POINT The National Weather Service in Birmingham confirmed one person was killed in an apparent tornado late Monday, Jan. 25, 2021. Around 30 people were injured. Major structural damage was reported in Fultondale and Center Point and other damage was seen in Clay. In Fultondale, a 14-year-old boy was killed in the area of New Castle Road. The child was a student at Fultondale High School. Authorities said the child was with his father in the basement of their home when a tree fell on the house. The father was also hurt. The Hampton Inn and Hurst Towing and Recovery also had major damage.

Crooks hit Clay car wash 2 times and it hasn t even opened yet

From The Tribune staff reports CLAY Business owners in Clay are hoping the public can help bring a crook to justice after items were stolen from their car wash twice. The incidents happened at Raindrop Car Wash, off Deerfoot Parkway. The new business is undergoing renovations and is expected to be opened in February 2021. The owner, Tara Buchanan, said the first crime that happened was the theft of a subcontractor’s trailer and tools. Thankfully, Buchanan said the trailer was recovered. But on Dec. 23, another incident happened at the location. Surveillance cameras captured a man at 4 a.m. taking more items from behind the building. The vehicle the person was in was described as a silver or light gray Ford F-150 regular cab truck. In the bed of the truck, were large black bags and a large aluminum barrel that was taken from the business.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies responded at 4 p.m. to the ECO Credit Union on Old Springville Road in Clay. Sgt. Joni Money said witnesses reported a man wearing all black clothing and a black mask entered the credit union and demanded money. The robber implied he had a weapon. No additional information has yet been released. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 205-325-1450 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
