Reuters/File ISLAMABAD: Amid system challenges, the Petroleum Division is seeking an average national basket price for natural gas both local and imported through a distant ‘political consensus’ even though it has fixed price commitments with various consumer groups. This comes at a time when the energy sector is facing serious gas and electricity shortages and both gas and power companies are struggling with their financials to ensure smooth supplies. The federal government has been asking the provinces for introduction of weighted average cost of gas (WACOG) by moving away from ring-fenced pricing and supply of local gas and imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) to various consumer categories.

Reuters ISLAMABAD: Azerbaijan State Oil Company (Socar) has expressed frustration over the Petroleum Division’s prolonged silence over its offer of providing two credit lines of over $220 million for oil and gas supplies to Pakistan. Informed sources told Dawn that Pakistan’s ambassador to Baku, Bilal Hayee, had alerted the government back home to deal with the matter in a manner that did not unnecessarily cast shadow over close friendly relations between the two countries. The two governments had agreed during a visit of Azerbaijan’s foreign minister to Pakistan in January to expand bilateral cooperation through oil and gas sector engagements to build upon strategically friendly relationship between the two countries.

Pakistan committed to cleaner fuels, green energy: SAPM

Daily Times July 10, 2021 Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Petroleum and Power Tabish Gohar has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to cleaner fuels and green energy. Talking to the US Chargé d’ Affaires a.i Angela Aggeler on Friday, the SAPM gave an overview of the country’s energy sector and the endeavours of the incumbent government to reform it. He said that the government would forge a massive addition of renewable capacity i.e. 30 percent by 2030 with 45 percent share of hydel power generation. The SAPM also underlined the importance of the gas storage facilities and said that the government is working on construction of strategic gas storages and this project would enhance the country’s capability to import gas and ensure sustainable economic growth. During the meeting, both discussed the outlook and market of the energy sector in Pakistan.
