Fire sweeps through 3 apartment buildings in N.J. city, 17 residents displaced Updated May 07, 11:18 AM; Posted May 07, 10:29 AM Facebook Share An early morning fire in Paterson damaged three apartment buildings, leaving 17 people in need of shelter and some of the evacuees temporarily trapped in a yard behind the fire, authorities said. The three-alarm fire began about 3 a.m. Friday inside a building in the 100 block of Lafayette Street, according to Paterson Police Director Jerry Speziale. Speziale said the fast-moving blaze damaged the apartment buildings on either side, and police and firefighters evacuated all three structures. Police officers and some of the evacuees, including one with physical disabilities, were trapped in a yard between a fence and “very heavy fire conditions,” Speziale said. They were freed after firefighters cut open the fence.

Mario E. Hernandez, 54, of Paterson is charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of criminal sexual contact, the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement. Detectives from the prosecutor’s office began investigating after getting a report from the state Division of Child Protection and Permanency in March that a child was being sexually abused. The 13-year-old reported being sexually abused by Hernandez in the fall at the teen’s Paterson home, an account that was corroborated by the younger child.

Wayne NJ house fire: Father, daughter, boyfriend killed, neighbor says

WAYNE A Wayne man, his 34-year-old daughter and her boyfriend were killed Monday evening when the Jackson Avenue home they were in caught fire, neighbors and relatives said Tuesday. The blaze at 121 Jackson Ave. began around 6:15 p.m. and left three people dead, Wayne officials and the Passaic County Prosecutor s Office said in a statement Tuesday.  That statement didn t name the victims, but a neighbor, Mike Nemeh, identified the three as Carlos Gutierrez, his daughter Katherinne and her boyfriend.  A GoFundMe page posted Tuesday afternoon also eulogized the trio.  Fire and pain is what is left in our family s heart because we as the four sisters left lost a sister, our mother with 4 children lost her husband, our niece who is only 4 years old is now left without a father and a mother, the page announced. There is no amount of tears or words to describe what we are feeling right now.

Drunk driver in hit-and-run crash that injured 70-year-old-man is arrested Updated May 06, 2021; Investigators have tracked down a hit-and-run dunk driver who authorities say struck and seriously injured a 70-year-old pedestrian in Passaic last month. Luisa Eusebio-Urena, 37, struck the man near the corner of of Pennington Avenue and Main Avenue around 5 a.m. on April 11, the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office said Thursday Eusebio-Urena was charged with assault by auto while intoxicated and within 1,000 feet of school property, knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving serious bodily Injury and endangering an injured victim, officials said. The Passaic resident surrendered at police headquarters Wednesday and was issued a summons before being released.
