Woman ignited paper towels during fight, caused massive apartment fire, officials say

A woman was indicted by a Passaic County Grand Jury for allegedly starting a fire at a Paterson apartment building last summer that displaced 60 residents and left four firefighters hospitalized, the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office announced Monday night.
Yanit Valdez, 38, of New York, was charged with two counts of second degree aggravated arson, four counts of third degree aggravated assault, and one count of fourth degree creating a risk of widespread injury, the office said. The fourth degree charge was the only new charge Valdez faced following the indictment. She was originally arrested on Aug. 13.
A 41-year-old Totowa resident was discovered dead in a hotel on Route 46 Thursday morning after he failed to check out of his room, prosecutors announced.
Hotel staff at the Ramada Inn in Totowa checked on the man, Gary Potenzone Jr., and discovered him deceased, authorities said.
He was identified by officers upon their arrival to the scene, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor s Office.
Prosecutors said an autopsy likely will be performed next week to determine the manner in which Potenzone died.
Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Totowa Police Chief Carmen Veneziano announce that at approximately 11:40 a.m. today, officers responded to the Ramada Inn located at 1 Route 46 West in Totowa on a report of a deceased male discovered inside of a hotel room.
Upon their arrival, officers were able to identify the deceased as Gary Potenzone, Jr., 41, from Totowa.
Police say the investigation revealed that hotel staff went to the room to conduct a welfare check when Mr. Potenzone failed to check out as scheduled.
There were no signs of physical force or violence at the scene, and the police do not believe there is any imminent danger to anyone in community.

TOTOWA, NJ - A deceased male was found in a hotel room of the Ramada Inn on Rt. 46 shortly before noon on Thurs. April 1.
According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Totowa Police Chief Carmen Veneziano, officers of the Totowa Police Department responded to a call regarding a deceased man in one of the hotel s rooms.
