Cops say angry woman lit paper towels, sparking Paterson fire

PATERSON A lit roll of paper towels is being blamed for starting a fire that spread to several apartments in August, displacing 60 people. Yanit Valdez, 38, of Manhattan, lit the roll on fire during an argument with a resident of 40 Cianci St., which caused a couch to ignite, according to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes. All the residents of the apartments escaped but four city firefighters were treated for minor injuries. The fire burned for hours and also destroyed several businesses on the lower level of the building, according to NorthJersey.com s coverage of the fire. A Passaic County grand jury handed up an indictment charging Valdez with with two counts of second-degree aggravated arson, four counts of third-degree aggravated assault and one count of fourth-degree creating a risk of widespread injury. She is currently being held at the Passaic County Jail.

Police were called shortly before 8 p.m. to the area of 17th Avenue and East 21st Street on a report of a shooting, according to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora. Officers found a 28-year-old Paterson man with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center and was expected to survive, Valdes and Baycora said in a joint statement.

Three men were shot on a Paterson street corner Thursday night, authorities said. Responding officers found a 28-year-old victim at 17th Avenue and East 21st Street shortly before 8 p.m. He was taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora said in a joint release. Within minutes, two others – one 29, the other 26 – arrived at St. Joe’s, they said. 20-Year-Old Paterson, Haledon Men Shot, Responding Police Sergeant s Car Struck

One of the victims, from Paterson, was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center after being struck several times by gunfire near the corner of Godwin Avenue and Summer Street just after midnight, they said.
