A 25-year-old man who was found with an illegal firearm that he claimed he had for “protection” was yesterday sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Police arrested Eric Thurston after they found him with a black Taurus pistol and six .40mm live rounds of ammunition on December 18.
He pleaded guilty to one count each of possession of an unlicensed firearm and illegal ammunition during his hearing before Magistrate Samuel McKinney yesterday.
The court was told that that day, officers responded to a code 91 near Island Luck on Cordeaux Avenue and Miami Street. Upon their arrival, they saw a man fitting the description they were given by officers in their control room. The prosecution said the suspect attempted to flee the scene, which prompted the officers to give chase. It was at that time that Thurston removed a black handgun from his waist and dropped it on the ground.
Four men were charged with drug possession in the Freeport Magistrate s Court on Thursday.
Kisnell George, 39; Collin Bain, 48; both of Eight Mile Rock, were charged with possession of dangerous drugs with the intent to supply, and Levi Missick, 36, of EMR, was charged with possession of dangerous drugs.
They appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Debbye Ferguson in Court 1. The trio pleaded guilty to the charge and were fined $850 or six months at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.
Joshua Oliver, of Grenada Avenue, Freeport, pleaded not guilty to possession of dangerous drugs with the intent to supply and was granted $1,500 bail with one suretor.

A 30-YEAR-OLD man was yesterday remanded to prison over allegations he broke into a woman’s house last week.
Danrico Carey was accused of breaking into a woman’s home and stealing two flat screen televisions, one Mac Pro laptop, three Bluetooth speakers, two Amazon fire sticks and a 60-pound gas tank on December 10.
The prosecution alleged the defendant also dishonestly received the items he was accused of stealing that day.
During his hearing before Senior Magistrate Derence Rolle Davis, Carey denied all of the allegations.
His case was subsequently adjourned to March 8, 2021 for trial.
In the meantime, Carey was denied bail and remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.

A ROYAL Bank of Canada financial services officer who was accused of falsifying several accounts and defrauding the bank of hundreds of thousands of dollars over a decade ago, was yesterday denied bail ahead of her trial.
Erma Mitchell appeared before Magistrate Armbrose Armbrister charged with over 80 fraud related offences which the prosecution alleged she committed between April 2008 and December 2009.
Yesterday, the 67-year-old was charged with 17 counts of falsification of accounts, 23 counts of forgery, 23 counts of uttering a forged document, 23 counts of fraud by false pretences and one count of conspiracy to commit fraud.
The finance officer was accused of falsifying the RBC accounts by fabricating personal loan application forms which were filed in the names of other people.

A 29-year-old man accused of killing his grandmother and attempting to kill his mother last week was charged with murder and attempted murder in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Rico Pratt appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt after he was accused of killing Pastor Gelena Pratt on December 4.
The prosecution argued that the accused also attempted to murder Gelena’s daughter, Aretha Pratt, that same day.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Audley Peters told reporters at the scene that police were alerted to the incident shortly before 10am on December 4.
Upon arrival at the home, officers discovered a woman’s body lying in a pool of blood in a bathroom.
