NASSAU, BAHAMAS Environmental groups have expressed serious concerns about Disney’s efforts to “rush through” environmental approval for their proposed $400 million cruise ship port at Lighthouse Point, Eleuthera.
Waterkeeper Alliance, Friends of the Earth US and four Bahamian environmental groups reEarth, Bahamas Reef Environmental Educational Foundation (BREEF), Save the Bays and Waterkeepers Bahamas said they are dismayed by indications that the thousands of public comments submitted recently “that raised dozens, if not hundreds, of questions about the adequacy of Disney’s environmental impact assessment (EIA) will not get serious consideration”.
In a statement released yesterday, it was noted that on May 7, the organizations submitted detailed comments, including from multiple independent experts, which were highly critical of the adequacy of the EIA.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS Real estate guru Mario Carey, a businessman and diver, is facing an uphill slog to get everyone on board to stop the illegal harvesting of Bahamian conch, fish and crawfish.
“I’ve been diving for more than 35 years and two weeks ago I went from Yellow Banks (north Exuma) to Sayle Rock (Eleuthera) without seeing a single grouper, hog fish [or] Margaret fish; not a conch, nothing,” he said.
“Yes, dolphin, or mahi-mahi were running, but the fish that feed on coral not a one in six hours in the water.
NASSAU, BAHAMAS Our Islands, Our Future (OIOF), a coalition of business owners, environmental groups and individuals who oppose oil drilling in Bahamian waters, announced yesterday it will host a live webinar on the future oil drilling in The Bahamas on Wednesday, May 12, 2021.
The event aims to take a closer look at the array of natural resources and industries that would be adversely impacted by an oil spill in our waters.
The webinar is open to the public and will facilitate the exchange of opinions and expertise.
The webinar will include a mix of presenters who will provide insight into the science of oil drilling as well as offer case studies on previous oil spills. Discussions will focus on whether The Bahamas has the know-how and resources to remediate such a disaster or even manage an oil-producing industry.
