Pakistan TV Bans Talk Show Host After He Criticized Army
The action against Hamid Mir comes after he spoke out against escalating curbs on freedom of expression in the country.

ISLAMABAD (AP) A Pakistani television station Monday took a prominent journalist off air, removing him as host of a popular talk show after he criticized the country’s powerful military, the journalist and rights groups said.
The development comes just days after the journalist, Hamid Mir, made a fiery speech at a rally in support of a fellow reporter, Asad Ali Toor, who was beaten up by three unidentified men in his apartment in Islamabad.

A landmark piece of legislation, the Sindh Protection of Journalists and Other Media Practitioners Bill 2021 was passed unanimously by the Sindh Assembly on May 28. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and its affiliate, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalist (PFUJ) commend this breakthrough and the initiative taken by journalist unions, human rights groups, and lawmakers in the Sindh province to protect the rights of media workers. The journalist protections bill was drafted in consultation with journalist representative organisations, including the Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) and Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ).
