ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Science and Technology Shibli Faraz said here on Thursday the country was heading towards water scarcity and about 27,000 children dying annually due to water-borne diseases was a sign of this alarming situation.
Speaking at the Pakistan Water Conference on Emerging Water Challenges at the Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources (PCRWR), he said that Pakistan was blessed with diverse landscape and seasons.
Mr Faraz pointed out that the Himalayan glaciers in the north were the largest frozen water reserves outside the polar region. The fertile alluvial plains of Punjab and Sindh provinces are irrigated by one of the largest contiguous irrigation systems of the world, he said.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) on Thursday identified 22 brands of bottled water as unsafe for human consumption.
The government, through the Ministry of Science and Technology has assigned the task to the PCRWR for quarterly monitoring of bottled or mineral water brands and publicising the results in the best interest of public health.
For the last quarter from April to June, 180 samples of mineral or bottled water brands were collected from Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Sargodha, Sialkot, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, D.G. Khan, Mianwali, Karachi, Tandojam, Badin, Quetta, Loralai, Peshawar, Abbottabad, Muzaffarabad and Gilgit. The government through Ministry of Science and Technology had assigned the task to the council for quarterly monitoring of bottled water brands and publicise the results in the best interest of public health.
For the last quarter - October to December, 2020 - 119 samples were collected from Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Quetta, Gilgit, D.G. Khan, Multan, Faisalabad, Karachi, Bahawalpur, Tando Jam, Sialkot, Muzaffarabad and Lahore. Ban imposed on motor boating in Rawal Lake

Islamabad : The local administration has imposed a ban on mechanical/motorised boating that is causing contamination and pollution in the water of Rawal Lake.
An official order Reader/AC (Sectt)/184 issued by the office of the Assistant Commissioner states “It has come to the knowledge that certain people are involved in mechanical/motorized boating at Rawal Dam Islamabad, which is causing contamination and pollution to the water of the Rawal Lake.”
“There are sufficient grounds for proceedings under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code, 1898 and immediate prevention and the speedy remedy is justified and the directions hereinafter appear are necessary,” it said.
