Govt urged to activate its horticulture export body

ISLAMABAD: Ahmad Jawwad, an expert on horticulture exports, on Tuesday urged the government to take notice of Pakistan Horticulture Development Export Company’s (PHDEC) failure to play its due role in enhancing this sector’s exports and decide if it s worth it.
“To date the country has no export strategy for this emerging industry and Pakistan’s share in international market is meager,” said Ahmad Jawad, Vice President of Pakistan Businesses Forum and former chairman FPCCI Standing Committee on Agriculture in a statement. Jawad said according to 2015 IFPRI IMPACT projections, Russia’s demand for fruit would the fastest growing category in food demand, reaching $11.4 billion and same was true for China, which could be a tremendous opportunities for Pakistani fruits.

Pakistan Businesses Forum (PBF) on Sunday called for a uniform price for wheat procurement by federal and provincial governments to avoid confusion among wheat growers.
Speaking to the media, PBF Vice President (VP) Ahmad Jawad stated that the federal government fixed wheat procurement price at Rs1,650 per 40kgs bag, Punjab at Rs1,800 per 40kgs bag and Sindh at Rs2,000 per 40kgs bag.
To avoid a crises-like situation that struck the market last year, growers wanted the government to chalk out a comprehensive plan for wheat procurement, he added.

Pakistan Businesses Forum (PBF) urged the government to announce a comprehensive package for uplifting the agriculture sector. “The farmers comprised 65 per cent of the country’s workforce,” stated PBF Vice President (VP) Ahmad Jawad.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, he said that farmers wanted fixing of the minimum support price (MSP) of wheat at Rs2,000 per maund. “They also wanted the MSP of sugarcane at Rs30.”
In addition to setting a flat electric power rate of Rs5 per unit for agri tube-wells, subsidies on seeds, fertilisers and other expenses should also be offered as the farmers had had a tough 12 months, which affected the food supply chain, especially fruit and vegetable growers, the business forum VP asserted.
