Manassas railway festival to bring return of in-person events The Manassas Railway Heritage Festival is coming down the tracks this year. This year’s event will mark the 26th time the festival has been held in the city, which celebrates the history of the railroads. The festival will include model train displays, memorabilia, specialty vendors, as well as live performances. As the coronavirus pandemic continues to be an issue of concern, how the festival operates has been made. One significant change is the train rides that are a hallmark of the festival that runs between Manassas and Clifton won’t be in operation this year to uphold social distancing rules.

Birchmere hosts tribute concert to musicians we lost in 2020

This past year, countless voices were silenced, but their iconic music lives on. This Friday, Daryl Davis salutes those musicians that we’ve lost with his sixth annual tribute concert “Thanks for the Memories” at The Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia. “I just keep a running tally until Dec. 31, then we scramble in January to write out the charts and put together the set,” Davis told WTOP. “It covers every genre and everybody, so there’s something there for everybody: young people, older people, generations, music you grew up with, current music, anybody who passed away.” How exactly does he structure the set list?

Rural Kansas history, culture showcased in Smithsonian exhibit

The Smithsonian Institution is helping to showcase the rural Kansas heritage. Through a series of in-person events, they are helping six Kansas communities showcase their people and culture.  The traveling Smithsonian exhibition, Crossroads: Change in Rural America, has its next stop at the Volland Store in Alma.  Small towns are overcoming challenges through innovative solutions. Volland s  Deep Roots and New Growth in Wabaunsee County, offers a reflection on how this rural community has responded to change. In conjunction with the in-person display, this Alma location will offer creative, historical information about the Flint Hills, which has one of the largest surviving areas of native tallgrass prairie in North America, as well as the immigrants who settled in Wabaunsee County.
