Communities across County Durham will come together this summer to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Durham Miners’ Gala after it was cancelled two years in a row due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The annual celebration of “community, solidarity and working-class life” will be replaced with a series of ‘little big meetings’ hosted by different communities across the region, bringing people together to mark the event’s 150th anniversary. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, only world wars and two national strikes had prevented the Gala from taking place.
“The Gala has always been a celebration of the best of us – of community and solidarity and of what we can achieve when we work together.”

With her election by the Legislature on Monday, Dr. Ruth Johnson became the seventh Mayo Clinic physician to serve on the University of Minnesota Board of Regents since 1907, when Dr. Will Mayo served.
But beyond its historical significance, Johnson s election restores and reinforces a relationship between Mayo Clinic and the university, said one of her chief legislative advocates.

Michael Hsu, of Blaine, who often votes against the administration’s proposals on tuition hikes and other issues, lost his bid for a second six-year term. So did Hsu’s frequent ally, Worthington’s Randy Simonson, who couldn’t get past the Regent Candidate Advisory Council’s screening process and was not considered by the full Legislature.
