A Summerhill College teacher, a Sea Scouts leader and a person who was described as trusted in the community was sentenced to one year and 9 months in prison for sexually assaulting three teenage boys in the late 70s and 1980s at Sligo Circuit Court yesterday (Monday, February 1st).
Edward Tighe (73) of Salmon Court, Ballisodare pleaded guilty to four counts of indecent assault in 1978, 1982 and 1986, during the time he was an English and Latin teacher in Summerhill.
The case, heard by Judge Francis Comerford, was told that one of the victims, Patrick Walsh, wanted to waive his right to anonymity. All three men had harrowing Victim Impact Statements read out in court which detailed the serious consequences the abuse they suffered had on them, their families and their relationships in the decades that followed.
A man convicted for racially abusing a General Election candidate in an anonymous phone call left a profound effect on the victim and his family, a court has heard.
Edward Smith (61) anonymously phoned Dublin Fingal People Before Profit candidate John Uwhumiakpor and told him Don t get involved in Irish politics. Irish politics is for Irish people.
Smith claimed he consumed alcohol on the day he made the anonymous phone call and lost the run of himself, Balbriggan District Court heard.
The court heard Mr Uwhumiakpor - who ran in the Dublin Fingal constituency in last year s General Election - received a phone call to his home at 12.26pm on January 29 last year.

A man who stalked his estranged wife after she left him - breaching a protection order six times and creeping onto her property at night to install GPS trackers onto her car so he could monitor her movements - has been sentenced to community detention.
Jason Knowles appeared before Judge Quentin Hix in the Christchurch District Court this afternoon.
He had earlier pleaded guilty to six charges relating to breaching a protection order granted to his former wife who says she left him because of his abuse and treatment of their children.
