Community Gun Buyback in Canton collects 129 guns

CANTON – Organizers of the Community Gun Buyback started collecting weapons a half-hour early when vehicles lined up Saturday morning outside the Canton Memorial Civic Center. The event  hosted by the Canton Police Department, Stark County Prosecutor s Office and several other community agencies also ended early about noon. A total of 129 unwanted guns were collected and will be destroyed, according to Christian Ball, director of public relations and community initiatives at the Prosecutor s Office. This likely won t be the last one that we hold, she said. It was the first gun buyback in Canton since the 1990s. People who volunteered to turn in guns were given a $100 gift card. 

Pastors join Safer Streets Initiative in Canton

The initiative includes: Community Gun Buyback from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 15 at the Canton Civic Center, 1101 Market Ave. N. It features $100 gift cards; no questions asked; no ID requirements. Shorb crime watch meeting, 6:30 p.m. May 13 at Project Rebuild, 406 Shorb Ave. NW; to attend online RSVP to Jim Knight at jnknight@starkcountyohio.gov. Stark NAACP online record-sealing clinic from 5 to 7 p.m. May 26. Advance registration required. Call 800-898-9454, or apply online at www.communitylegalaid.org/apply. The Revs. Walter Moss, Raphael Ray Cox and Michael Pressley say they have delivered eulogies for people killed by gun violence.
