But vehicle crime, shoplifting, burglary and theft offences recorded by Cleveland Police in the borough fell substantially. Members of the Safer Stockton Partnership, a multi-agency body which draws together police, the local council and the community and voluntary sector, received a report showing the crime picture in the borough for a 12 month period from June last year to the end of May. Total crime fell by 4.5% from 19,517 recorded offences to 18,647 when compared to the previous 12 months. All categories of theft fell by 31.2% from 5,900 offences to 4,058 offences, including residential burglary (-33.7%), vehicle crime (-38.7%) and shoplifting (-37%). The report said lockdown measures to combat Covid-19 were the cause of some changes in crime patterns.
