Colombia’s Congress on Thursday sank a motion of no confidence against Defense Minister Diego Molano who has been responsible for the brutal repression of anti-government protests of the past weeks.
Most senators of the coalition that supports far-right President Ivan Duque voted against the motion filed by the opposition over the mass human rights violations of the past weeks.
Molano celebrated the decision and said the Senate had “expressed its support for the soldiers and policemen” whose institutions are accused of killing dozens and disappearing hundreds of protesters.
A vote of confidence to continue guaranteeing the security of all, of those who march peacefully and of those who are at home. And to continue to act against violence and blockades.

Russia s Foreign Ministry summoned Colombian ambassador Alfonso Lopez Caballero following remarks by Bogotá s Defense Minister Diego Molano, who claimed that Moscow was behind ”cyberattacks” linked to the political unrest the South Amerian country is going through.
Molano made the statement in the context of alleged foreign intervention aimed at instigating internal political instability and mass protests in Colombia, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Monday.
Russia has more than once invited Colombia to enter into a dialogue in the field of international cybersecurity and it remains prepared for such cooperation, the Foreign Ministry said.

Police intervened in Colombia’s congress on Tuesday when a debate on a no confidence motion against the defense minister threatened to turn violent.
With often emotional pleas, opposition representatives demanded the resignation of Defense Minister Diego Molano over brutal police violence in response to largely peaceful anti-government protests.
Emotions overheated when coalition Representative John Jairo Hoyos (U Party) said he would break with the coalition agreement to vote against the motion.
Members of President Ivan Duque‘s far-right Democratic Center party loudly dismissed Hoyos, which led to a fierce reaction from the opposition.
Police stepped in to prevent physical aggression between lawmakers in a nearby chamber and House President German Blanco (Conservative Party) adjourned the session.
