India on Sunday signed a $50 million [approximately Rs 3,600 crore] defence Line of Credit agreement with the Maldives to facilitate the country’s capability building in the maritime domain, reported PTI. India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who is in Male on a two-day visit, also held discussions with Maldives’ Defence Minister Mariya Didi.
“Glad to sign with Defence Minister Mariya Didi the UTF Harbour Project agreement,” Jaishankar tweeted. “Will strengthen Maldivian Coast Guard capability and facilitate regional HADR efforts. Partners in development, partners in security.”

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar left Maldives for Mauritius on Sunday after discussing a $50 million defence line of credit (LoC) agreement with Defence Minister Mariya Didi.
Jaishankar also witnessed the signing of a project execution contract for construction of roads in the southern-most island atoll Addu which, he said, underscored the importance of connectivity in India-Maldives ties.
The last visit of an external affairs minister was in August 2018 when Sushma Swaraj visited Mauritius for the World Hindi Conference.

Reiterating its commitment to the security of Island nation the Maldives, India on Sunday signed a USD 50 million defence Line of the Credit Agreement. The deal between the two countries would boost the maritime capabilities of Maldives which is strategically located in the India Ocean region.
The $50 million credit line agreement was signed between the Ministry of Finance of the Maldives and the Export-Import Bank of India for defence projects.
