Using data and technology to keep young drivers safer
A study into using telematics technology to improve driving behaviours of young drivers has received funding from the federal government’s Road Safety Innovation Fund.
Telematics is an interdisciplinary field that includes telecommunications and information processing. This study will use a telematics device to capture real-time data about vehicle usage, such as acceleration, speed, turning, and braking to paint a picture of the driver’s behaviour.
The study will be conducted by Dr Sharon Chen and Professor Denny Meyer from Swinburne’s School of Health Sciences

Funding boost for road safety innovation
Forty projects aimed at reducing road fatalities will benefit from a share of $10 million over the next three years under Round 2 of the Australian Government’s Road Safety Innovation Fund.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said the Australian Government is committed to reducing road injuries and fatalities.
“The Road Safety Innovation Fund targets projects designed to reduce fatal and serious road crashes,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.
“This program prioritises initiatives that seek to improve road safety for everyone travelling on Australian roads.
“These innovative projects have potential for expansion here in Australia and internationally, and they set the foundations to change the way Australians approach safety and the movement of people and goods.

Improving safety barriers to reduce road deaths and serious injuries
While conventional road safety guardrails have effectively reduced fatalities in road accidents, they have not prevented increasing cases of serious injuries.
Swinburne’s Dr Shanqing Xu, Professor Dong Ruan and Associate Professor Hing Ho Tsang have received $358,980 funding from the Australian Government’s Road Safety Innovation Fund to assess standard barrier systems and optimise emerging safety roller barrier technology – a potential game changer for road safety.
A safety roller barrier (SRB) is a steel rail safety barrier consisting of vertical steel posts that support a series of yellow ethylene vinyl acetate rollers.
